last line

The last line of Inem is: "And Mother continued to uphold the respectability of her home." Do you think Muk feels that his mother is "respectable?" Or do you think this last line is saying something else? If so, what?

  1. When I read that line, I thought Muk was saying that Inem came back again and pleaded for Muk and his mother to take her back, but again Muk's mother refused to accept her back.

  2. I think Muk feels that his mother is valuing her home's respectability over friendship with a human being. And I think that Muk feels that this is the wrong way aroud, that Inem should be valued over a particular home's respectability.

  3. I think this line is saying that Mother didn't let Inem in because to have a divorced woman in your home was not considered right. She was keeping her house "respectable".

  4. She probably meant that she kept it respectable by keeping a divorced girl out of the house, like alec, and by acting like none of it happened.

  5. I agree with Alec and Tim, in that the line meant it to be respectable to the ancestors, by keeping a divorced woman out of her house.
