Muk

Muk cares about Inem. He is not much younger than her, and yet he understands that she is too young to marry, while Inem doesn't. Why is that?

  1. Inem is eight years old and does not know the what the commitment of a true wedding means. She is just a girl who thinks a weddings is just getting to throw a big party. She didn't know what she was getting into besides wearing a beautiful dress.

  2. He understands it because he was raised like that, just like Inem was raised to understand that children marry young. It's not easy to shed beliefs that have been pressed onto you from an early age. You just assume it's right, no matter what someone else tells you.

  3. Muk is thinking about how Inem will feel after the marriage and how she probably would have liked to be a child longer. I think Inem was just thinking about the wedding and being all pretty and dressed up. Every eight year old girl loves to dress up, so she was really excited and didn't really think about anything else. Maybe if she would have really thought about being married, she wouldn't have wanted to get married in the first place.

  4. I think Gus has deeper feelings for Inem and he wanted it to be them getting married when they're older and more mature and ready. Inem wasn't clear about his feelings though and thought getting married would be wonderful, even if it were to a guy she didn't know.

  5. Muk was born into a family that got married when they were older, not young like Inem's family. He was born to a mother in her 20s and Inem was born to a mother still in her teens. He learned that you don't get married to get money, and he learned not to get married at a young age, because it could mean an unhappy marriage.

  6. I think Inem didn't really know what she was getting into, and I think Muk just wanted to protect her, even though he didn't know why. I think Muk just had an instinct to protect his friend, so she wouldn't get hurt, or have her feelings hurt. Inem didn't really know what was expected of her through marriage, and probably thought that after the wedding she'd live happily ever after just like all girls do.

  7. I think that Inem just thought it would be fun and it would have presents, cake, jewelry, and makeup. She doesn't realize the consequences of not having the person you want to be in a marriage with. I think that Gus/Muk was just trying to protect her.

  8. I think that Inem's parents are at fault here. They set her up to enjoy the wedding day and to look forward to marrying a TEENAGER. Her parents fogged her mind of thinking for itself. Inem just listened to what her parents were feeding her avid ears.

  9. I think that Inem is just thinking of the romantisized view of marriage- the dress, the makeup, the food, the jewelry- and not what really happens once one marries. She must've only been thinking about the immediate future (only the wedding part) and nothing else. Inem was also very uninformed, I'm assuming, about what marriage constitutes besides a wedding and being a respectful wife.

  10. Inem isn't thinking about everything that is going to happen after she is a mariied woman. She is just living in the moment, and only caring about the fun, huge ceremony, and all the attention. Muk, on the other hand, is probably thinking about what's going to happen afterward because he probably doesn't care very much about the wedding in particular.
