flashbacks

I think reading Ishmael’s flashbacks are very important. The story would go on without these, so why do you think he chose to insert them? What do they tell us about Ishmael?

  1. I think that the flashbacks are really important, because without them we wouldn't realize what his life was like, and how it had transitioned to the horrible life that has him runing away everyday.

  2. If there wasn't flashbacks then you wouldn't be able to understand a lot of the customs that they have and how it changes his perspective and opinions on things.

  3. I agree with Josh. I think the flashbacks help us see how his life used to be, when he was happy and still connected with his family. Ishmael also tells us a little bit about what happened to his friends and their families when the rebels attacked. They had to go through a lot, but still managed to escape and stay alive. It must have been hard to share with others, but it shows that the boys really trust each other.

  4. See I do agree with all three of the comment above me. Flashbacks, I believe are solely issued the responsibility of explaining customs and ethnic reasoning. It brings in a mood that can either make you want to cry, kill the author, or just laugh and think 'yeah I finally get that!'

  5. Flashbacks are important in this book because in the beginning of the book, readers didn't get a chance to really meet Ishmael's family. Having flashbacks gives the chance to see how much Ishmael connected his family.

  6. I agree with the others. The flashbacks tell us a little about his life before the war.

  7. The flashbacks tell us more about Ishmael's past, like everybody else typed above. Ishmael most likely put these into the story to give us more detail about what was going on and give us more information on what was going on before the war.

  8. I also agree with everybody, and I also think that the flashbacks tell us what is different in his life now by telling us what happend then.

  9. I think that the flashbacks are important because they show what his life was like before the war, and how dramatic of a difference that the war has made.

  10. I also agree with everyone. Flashbacks are really important because it tells how his life was before all of this dramatic stuff happened.

  11. Flashbacks are very important in a book like this. If there weren't any flashbacks then you wouldn't get the mood of the whole entire book. The reason he keeps moving on and on everyday with out any reasoning to live, but flashbacks show us that he loves his family. He wants to find his family. Flashbacks tell the story before the story. If there weren't any flashbacks this book would be very confusing.

  12. One thing I'd like to add is that we really get a feel for what a tender heart Ishmael has. We can see how his family was really important to him. We also see how he had a deep respect for others in the community.

It will be important to remember later on in the book that Ishmael is a caring, fearful young man and that he did have respect for humanity.

  13. Even though I'm basically typing the same thing that everyone has said so far, flashbacks are REALLY important in this book. As others said we learn about him and his family when they were happy, but flashbacks are also in a way fun to read because its the only really happy thing in the whole book besides the end (I think).

  14. The flashbacks are important because then we wouldn't see how normal life was before the war. We also wouldn't be able to know what Ishmael was like before the war. The flashbacks tell a lot about African culture and how the whole village was involve in the raising of the children.

  15. If Ismeal just told the story all the way through, from the beginning of his life, until now, there would be too much. If he just writes like the way he did, then he can put down the main, important things, and gently add in a few details that may be needed to understand the main parts. I also think all the flashbacks make the story cooler, it doesn't follow a regular story line.

  16. I think he chooses to insert the flashbacks because then you can see what his life before the war was like and it tells us about him more
