Storytelling

Ishmael and his friends enjoy the Bra Spider stories. Because these stories are handed down, each time they are told, they are a bit different, depending on the storyteller.

Are there stories handed down in your family? Does it seem like the same story keeps getting told? Why do you think that is? Do you think stories are important family rituals?

  1. There is this one story kind of this that my grandma tells us. It's about if we waste food then after you die you would have to eat worms. How ever many plates of food you wasted, that's how many worms you would have to eat. Everytime my grandma would say that she would change what you have to eat like rats or bugs. None of us believe it, but i think on the inside we really beleieve it

  2. My family doesn't exactly pass it down but I hope to when I have kids. My mom and dad would tell Sam ,my little sister, that chicken nuggets weren't made of chicken. Sam hated eating meat of any sort, no wonder she is so skinny, so they told her chicken nuggets were made of "chicken beaks". So whenever we have chicken nuggets we joke about eating "chicken beaks".

  3. My family doesn't really pass down stories, but when I was little, I loved to make shadows. It really annoyed my brother so he told me that one time, a little girl my same age made so many shadows that she was captured into one and that she now lives in shadows everywhere.

  4. Only some stories are still told in my family. But every time i hear one of them, it's told differently. I actually think that's better because than you don't have to hear the same exact story over and over. I also think that stories are important in family rituals.

  5. We don't really pass down stories in my family, but my grandma used to say tsomething to my mom when they were making cookies. My mom would eat some cookie dough and my grandma would say, "You'll get worms!" Now, my mom says that to me, but she embellishes a little, "You'll get worms. Crawling around in your butt!" To which I say, gross, Mom. And bring it, worms.

  6. There aren't too many stories passed down in my family. The ones that are, are different every time that I hear them. Each time its told it has a little piece of everyone added into it. I think story telling in family rituals are important though because it is almost as if it makes everyone closer.

  7. I feel the same as Sarah. Our family does not have stories, but when i do har stories, they are always told differently. No i don't feel story telling is a big part of family rituals. If our family had stories i might feel differently. If your family has important stories that mean alot, then it is very important to share them as a family. It depends if you have stories to share.

  8. With my family there are storys, but they are mostly funny stories about my uncles or just jokes about what my Dad and his friend have done. If there were storys I know that I would tell them to my kids but I know that I will tell them these jokes!

  9. My family doesn't really pass down stories. Mostly my brother and I hear stories that my father and mother did when they where kids. Once though we were picking apples from our grandmas tree and she saw a flower that she would play with when she was little. She said that when she was little she would take the flower and put like a old clothes pin and pretend they were dolls and she would play with them. It ment a lot to me because my grandma grow up on farm with not a lot of money, she didn't have a lot of toys and she had a lot of sisters and brothers. My dad tells me stories over and over and they really don't change much, because I think he wants us to really understand his point of view. I think that stories are importent in life and in some family rituals.

  10. In my family we don't really tell stories. My grandma is the only one that tells stories with all her grand kids. They're mostly ghost stories. My mom tells me stories about me all the time, but I wouldn't past those down because they are so embarrassing hahaha. I think stories could be important depending how your family comes together. Some families come together over meals, games, movies, or stories, but in family we come together by all those.
