community

One of the things that strikes me about Ishmael’s memories of his village is that there seemed to be such a strong sense of community. This is evident in the village’s celebration of Ishmael’s name giving ceremony. There is an African Proverb too, that is something to the effect of: It takes a village to raise a child. Do you agree with this proverb? Explain.

  1. Well kind of because it look's like in their culture that a "village" is their compelete family, but at the same time to much family might be a bad thing. But that's just what I think.

  2. I think that Ishmael's community would agree with that proverb because everyone feeds everyone else, even if it means less food for themselves. It could be kind of irritating to have a whole "village" as a family because everyone would be in everyone else's business, but it would be nice too, because everyone looks out for everyone else.

  3. I agree because without other people around you growing up, you wouldn't know how to interact with other human beings other than family. On the other hand, having people boss you around, and having you repect them as you would to your parents would be a little annoying. But, that's just my opinion.

  4. I agree with this because you can only go so far by yourself. When your just with the same people everyday you don't get as much support as you would from other outside family and friends. When you see other people grow up and and they are successful you believe you can do it. You are also more respectful when it comes to people you meet in general, because in a community there's a variety of different people.

  5. I agree with it, because i don't know what i would do without any friends or people besides my family to do things with.

  6. I also agree because many people in the village do something for the child. One person may be the child's teacher, and another it's mentor. Without different people helping the child, the child probably won't be successful.

  7. I kind of agree with that proverb, because each village is a community and prettty much everyone in the commuinty is usually considered family.

  8. I completely agree with what Da'Vine. You can only go so far by yourself, and meeting and talking with people outside of your family really helps you become more successful. If you only spent time with your family, you wouldn't know how to talk or do things with people you didn't know. I also like what Da'Vine said about being more successful when you see others grow up and be successful. I think that that is totally true. I think that a person would want to work even harder to try and be a successful person themselves.

  9. I agree and I don't agree. I agree because you need to interact with other people all the time. You cant just be stuck all alone for your whole life. I disagree because sometimes I think that it would get annoying to have people in your life all the time. If the village wasn't very big then it would be okay, but if it is a village of 100 people that could be a lot to deal with.

  10. I kinda argue with guineapigz about if there are more then like 100 people in a village it could get really hard to live, but I really would like to live in a place where people in a town know each other. Like in St. Cloud you could have a neihgbor and never know them like me. So in some ways I wish we could live like that and in others I kinda don't.

  11. I agree sort of because you can't just be stuck in your immediate family and not know anyone else. You have to interact with lots of people to really grow and develop. With the proverb, I think that they are talking about how you have your teachers and your neighbors, they're all like your family.

  12. Ishmael is very close to his village, and also very respectful. I think it is kind of a bad thing, though, to be so close to everyone. If yo're that close to everyone, they're all going to know your business. I wouldn't want everyone in my communtity to know everything about me, I can tell you that.

  13. i agree with this proverb because all the people in your village teach you something, so they are like family.
