Ishmael doesn’t believe in revenge. “What I have learned from my experience is that revenge is not good. I joined the army to avenge the deaths of my family and to survive, but I’ve come to learn that if I am going to take revenge, in that process I will kill another person whose family will want revenge; then revenge and revenge and revenge will never come to an end” (199).

What can you add? What is your perspective? Is revenge a natural feeling? What can you do to avoid seeking revenge?

  1. I agree with Ishmael because if you want revenge, and then the family that you took revenge on wants revenge, then it will keep going on. I think revenge is a natural feeling, but that you shouldn't act on it. I think that if you forgive it will help you to not act on it. Forgiveness provides a sense of closure, and it helps you to move on.

  2. I agree with Ishmael and Katie! Revenge will just keep going on in a circle and it could blow up into something that would probably seem useless or even stupid to still be angry about in the end. I think that revenge is a natural thing because if you're hurt that bad, you will probably want to do something about it. The only thing is that you could regret it for the rest of your life. One way you can avoid seeking revenge is to forgive. Forgiveness can make you and someone else happier. It's pretty much a win-win situation. You should always think about actions and how they will affect yourself and someone else in the future.

  3. Avenge is only a re short of revenge, its great that Ishmael relizes that revenge wont get him anywhere. It only takes 2 people to continue the cycle and the cycle wont change. Revenge does drive people though to do great and scary things.

  4. Ishmael is very right, and makes a good point. I think revenge is NOT a good thing. However, I do think revenge feels good for a little while. It helps you let go of your anger, but it usually has severe consequences. If you do it to your friend, it could end your friendship. Or as Ishmael said, it could keep going on, and on, and on. I think revenge is a natural feeling, and in some ways it's almost an instinct. But the best way to avoid it is probably to suck it up, tell yourself you'd be more of a man to not seek revenge, and just let go.
