Novel Ending

The ending of the novel is incredibly powerful. At seven years of age, Ishmael had an answer to the monkey dilemma, although he never shared his answer with anyone until now.

In your opinion, why does Ishmael end the story here? Do you think Ishmael is happy with how he has chosen to live his life? Do you think Ishmael could have made different choices?

  2. I think that he regrets a lot of things. In the book he said that he wished that he had spent more time with his mom and little brother because he really only grew up with his dad and older brother Junior. Ishmael could've made different decisions, but he didn't so this is how his life ended up. I think that he knows that better then most people.

  3. I believe that Ishmael ended his story like this to show that there are terrible choices in life. I think he's trying to tell us that with these choices you can't only think about how this will affect you. I think he wants to get a person to sit down and think about what they can do with their life. It's kind of a thing that tears at the back of you're mind that you'll never forget, and when you are faced with a choice that is life-changing you'll think of this.

  4. I think that Ishmael ended the book where he did because the monkey asks an extremely hard question, and wanted you to think about what you would do. I think that Ishmael is not happy that he was a child soldier, but he didn’t have much of a choice. I think that he is happy with his life now, though. If Ishmael had made different choices, I think that he would’ve chosen not to be a child soldier, and maybe not to stop on the hill before the village where his family was.

  5. I think that ishmeal ended the story the way he did because his desision in the story with shooting the monkey so no one else would be in the same predicament is kinda the same reason he fought in the war so that he could make a difference for other boys so they would not have to be put in the same predicament he was in wether to fight for the army or die

  6. In my opinion Ishmael could have picked a better ending, his ending didn't do the book enough justice. The monkey thing could have meant anything.

  7. I think he ended the book this way because he was comparing shooting all those people to like killing one of your parents. I don’t think he is happy on how he lived his life. If he had a choice I think he would have lived it differently, and would have made different choices.
