Rabbit Proof Fence

When the girls are first taken, the grandmother beats her own head with a stone in agony. Why does she do this? Explain.

  1. You kind of explained this yourself. The emotional pain is too much for the woman to bear so she attempts to forget it by enducing physical pain. It's kind of like the whole 'cutting' thing that people do, just with blunt force trauma instead of sharp.

  2. I was also wondering this when we saw the scene in the movie. You kind of explained that it was like another way that is a bit similar to people that cut themselves or hurt themselves when they blame themselves. I guess the grandmother does this to try to numb away the pain of losing the girls with the pain of her own actions.

  3. At first I almost thought she was trying to cause herself a bit of brain damage so she could completely forget it, not just make the pain fade away. But afterward when Ms. Clear explained it I realize that yes, she was just trying to make the pain go away by creating physical pain.

  4. Ha, when this happened in the movie I was very confused. But now I sort of have a better clue. She hits the stone to her head creating physical pain and I agree with SCHLKAT=D=D, mizzexquisite18. and Poncho.

  5. I think she does it because it is to block the pain of losing her grandchildren by creating physical pain to block out the emotional pain.

  6. At first I was also confused. I thought it was just away to make the movie to show culture of pain. Now I know that the pain she was feeling inside were so heavy that it had to come out with physical pain. I also agree with Sarahkinz, SCHLEKAT=D=D, mizzexquisite18, and Poncho.

  7. At first I thought that the grandmother was beating herself because h\she thought that it was her fault that the people took her. So it was kind of like punishing herself. Now I realize that it was just a way of like cutting herself.

  8. I think she did this because she was in so much emotional pain, that she wanted to get it all out. It's like someone who is overworked, and they have to take a break and settle down a bit. She can't stand that she's losing them, so she has to take a break... Except in a really painful way.
