Appropriatness

As his teacher, was what Lidia Mikhaylovna did appropriate? Can something be inappropriate, when the intentions are good?

  1. I don't think that what Lidia Mikhaylonva did wasn't appropriate. I don't think it was appropriate because teachers shouldn't do anything illegal with their students, or they should do anything illegal anyways.

  2. It was inappropriate because she was a teacher. More often then not, the person who does something inappropriate doesn't have good intentions, but this time she did. So I feel bad for her, but it didn't show good judgement on her part.

  3. What Lidia Mikhaylovna did was probably not appropriate. She technically gambled with a minor, and it's worse because she is a teacher. Her intentions were to cheer him up, and it worked. He made some money so he could buy some food for himself. Yes, something can be innapropiate with good intentions. I agree with what the teacher did though.

  4. I don't think it was because her intentions were good. Lidia knew that the main character wouldn't get addicted to gambling because he had told her honestly that he only wins enough for food. She could see that he was hungry and poor. When she had asked him if he wanted dinner, he would always refuse. Lidia found a different approach by sending pasta, but realized she didn't think it out clearly when the main character found out and refused it too. She tried a different approach again, one that was successful. She realized if he knew he had earned the money fair and square, he could feel right about excepting it.

  5. Forget my last comment. I think that it was inappropiate for her to play an illegal game with her student, and also that she should not do anything illegal anyways with or without a student of hers.

  6. I think it's bad enough for a teacher to secretly do something, but to include a student is even worse. I vote inappropriate.

  7. I think it was appropiate that she was feeding him, but it was not appropiate to play for money, and to keep the money she got for him. I think even though her intentions were good, it was still wrong.

  8. I though she was kinda weird for bringing him home. They should of just studied at school instead. Since she is a teacher, I thought is was odd that she wanted to bring him home with her. But... her intention was ok, she was just a nice lady who maybe thought of the boy as maybe her own child. She did live alone so maybe so she just wanted some company.

  9. I think it was a way for her to keep him coming to her house to study French. If he didn't have anything to look forward to he probably wouldn't have gone to her house. In some way it was inappropriate for her to play measures with him. It was basically gambling.

  10. What Lidia did, I thought was very inappropriate. I think that even if the intentions are good, it still inapppropriate and unacceptable. I agree with jordan, I feel sorry for her, but that didn't show very good judgement on her part even if the situation was innocent.

  11. I think what she did was inappropriate no matter how much he need those Frech lessons. The circumstances being what they are don't allow her to invite a student into her house and they definitely do not allow her to play for money. But I also think, creating a bond with a student is way more important and that's exactly what she did. He needed help and she helped him and that's what matters most.

  12. Appropriatness is something that can change from person to person. Some people may not find that appropriate, but I figure that she's a person too, and has every right to be a part of those games as he does.
And yes, I think things can have good intention, but still be taken badly. Like a simple pat on the head can be an endearing action in America and for some cultures it's horrible insulting.

  13. I kind of think it was a bit weird for Lidia Mikhaylovna to have taken the one kid home to tutor him. I think it was ok to play the game, but not for money. Teachers gambling with students is completely uncool!!

  14. I argee with Jenny (:! I don't think she had any other opition! He wasn't taking the food and he wasn't going to take her money. I'm sure that the money she won from him was used the next time and she was technically giving his money back. I'm also sure that she would have done it any other way if she could.

  15. Okay. I think it was ok for her to help the main character since he didn't have any money to eat or anything. But it's just really wierd to do stuff secretly with a teacher. It's like if Ms. Clear was secretly bringing me to the casino to get money. Yeah WIERD!

  16. I think that Lidia was helping him fall back into a bad habit. I mean I know that he had to get food, but the teacher shouldn't be gambling with a student. If you're going to take a student home with you (weird) at least only concentrate on studying.
