"End of Skill" and Vanessa

Vanessa loves Kente cloth because it makes her feel closer to her African heritage. The Ambassador loved Kente cloth because it was beautiful and skillful work. Neither used it "correctly" or treated it with the same respect as someone from Jimmy's village. But, in a way, both increased the value of the cloth by making it known to the world and popularized. What may be gained or lost by this? Is the value of Kente cloth then diminished or increased?

  1. I think that it might gain populatity? other than that is just shows you have no respect for the kente cloth. I wouldn't say you completly diminished the value but you should did loose some of it.

  2. I think the value of Kente cloth has decreased because it has been made into a commercial product anyone can relate to. It will never have the special religious value again, but will remain so in those who already knew of it before Jimmy.

  3. I think it was both. The traditional value was diminished by using it wrong. The value was increased too, because it was like advertising the cloth.

  4. I think that the kente cloth would have gained popularity, but it also would have lost some of its meaning, if you use a sacred cloth as a rug it isn't respectful, and it will offend some people. So I think that the kente cloth lost some of its origional meaning but gain some money value.

  5. The only thing that could be gained from the whole ordeal was maybe some popularity and recognition. As far as monetary value, I think that aspect increased a lot. Besides that, I don't think much was gained.

  6. I think the kente got well known but people won't treat the kente with much respect as the african people do. I think most of the kente is deminished because people probably won't use it with respect but people a admire the pattern so it isn't completely diminished.

  7. I think that you are losing what the kente cloth means. It is very sacred to them. I think the value of the cloth is being diminished because the people are not using it how they are supposed to use it.

  8. It loses the really value of the cloth like sacredness and importance but it gains popularity, making more money. It is not diminshed by the people like Jimmy's village who value it so much. To the rest of the world kente cloth is just another pretty fabric to do anything with so it then diminshed by the real value, but increased by value of money.

  9. I don't think the value of the Kente cloth was diminished or increased. Vanessa and The Ambassador cherished the cloth, so they were using it the way they wanted to- they weren't trying to diminish the value. They weren't increasing the value of the Kente cloth because Vanessa and The Ambassador "weren't using the cloth properly".

  10. I think that the only thing gained from the whole kente cloth thing as that he got money and he made his father shameful of him. It wasn't worth it to see his father cry in front of him for the first time.

  11. I think the kente cloth has lost value. It isn't as sacred as it used to be. Now, it isn't thought of a rare and priceless cloth. You are now able to get it as a souvenir that you might end up throwing away.

  12. I think that the kente cloth won popularity, but lost the meaning of it. It was sacred to them and people were starting to use it incorrectly. I don't think the vaue was diminished or increased.

  13. I think that it would boost the kente cloth's popularity, but it would screw up it's meaning and bring shame to Jimmy's village.

  14. The only thing gained was the kente cloth got more popular in more places. The value of the kente cloth was diminished because now most people probably won't treat the kente cloth the way it is supposed to be treated.

  15. It would lose its customary value in Jimmy's village, but it would probably gain monetary value.

  16. I think that the kente lost its meaning because it's not a rare or as meaningful anymore.

  17. I agree with Hunter. I think the kente lost its meaning because since it has gotten more popular its not as rare or meaning ful anymore. I think the value of the kente cloth decreased because its not rare and its not as special anymore.

  18. I think that the kente cloth lost some value when it was used in the wrong way. So even though the cloth was being loved by lots of people it lost value because of how it was used.
