Uncle and Laura

Ishmael had to rely on the kindness of his unknown uncle and of Laura. Neither "owed" him anything, yet both offered him a home. What does that tell you about society in general? Do you have any comments to add in regards to this?

  1. It tells me that even though they don't know each other very well, but they're family and family sticks together no matter what. I think his uncle was happy to see him alive and safe.

  2. In general it tells me that society is very helpful and able to take people in to their homes when they are barely living themselves.

  3. In general it shows that people are very nice to their people in their society, and that they would help them out in times of struggle.

  4. It tells me that they have some respect and gratitude towards Ishmael. I think they feel they owe him for killing rebels and fighting for his country. I think some of our people in the U.S. wouldn't take a soldier in to there home because they would be scared.

  5. What this tells me about the society is that the power to stick together and depend on one another is very strong. Even though Ishmael's uncle and aunt at the time only knew that he used kill people, they still wanted to take him in. I think they took him in because they wanted him to have a better life and trusted that he put all his past in the war behind him.

  7. It shows me that in their society familys stick together no matter what, even though Ishmeal fought in war his uncle took him in. I thought it was very kind of his uncle to take him in even when they have never met. That shows alot about a person.

  8. It to me shows the kindness. I think in every society everyone watches out for the children and younger people. Older people just seem to have the parenting instinct. The thought to save the young is always there. It like when someone's child is injured like stitches your heart just automatically goes out to them.

  9. It shows that in their society families are always loving and accepting. Even though Ishmael went to rehabilitation, he still could get angry or something. Also, to live with an uncle that you have never met means that they really do love you, just because you are family.

  10. It tells me that in African society, they don't take adoption as seriously as the United States. Here we have a whole process with papers and meetings and work. In Africa, he just gave him time to pack, picked up, and left.
