family

When Ishmael is very close to seeing his family again, circumstances keep this from happening. However, seeing his family would probably have ensured his death.

Do you believe in fate? Do you think this was meant to be?

Ishmael also says that seeing his family would have been worth dying for. What do you think? Would you agree? What would your choice have been?

  2. I think that in the end Ishmael was meant to live, come to America, and get help so that he can be happy.
I agree with Ishmael, I think being able to see his family would have been worth it. If I were in that situation I would have chosen to stay with my family and die with them. I would choose this because I would rather die with the ones I love rather than die not knowing what happened and never getting a chance to say goodbye.

  3. I think that it was meant to be that he couldn't see his family. I think that Ishmael made was right about wanting to see his family I would have wanted to see mine too. My choice would have been to see my family even if it meant death because family is the most important thing.

  4. I do believe in fate, it did happen for a reason. Although i also agree with Ismael, it would have been worth it to see them one more time. I would have gone to see them no matter what.

  5. Yes, I do believe in fate, and yes I think it was meant to be. I think that seeing your family again and dying because of it is better than never seeing them again, especially if you are just a young kid. I would agree on trying to see them. My choice would have been to see them, even if it meant dying to see my family.

  6. Yes i do believe in fate and i do think this was meant to be. I think that seeing his family wouldn't have been worth dying for because he would've only seen them for about a minute then he and his family would've been dead. No i don't agree with Ishmael saying that he would see his family even if he would've died. My choice would've been to stay back.

  7. I think that Ishmael was meant to be stopped by the man because if he didn't then he would've died with his family, and if he died then we wouldn't have the book he wrote. Without the book then we wouldn't be aware of the harsh conditioned in Africa. This book has opened a whole new world to me. Here, in America, we don't have to spend sleepless nights wondering if a group of horrible men come into your city and kill everyone you've ever known and loved.

  8. Also my choice would've been to be with my family because i would rather be surrounded by the ones i loved for the last time then taking a chance to die alone.

  9. I believe it was meant to be that he wasn't in the village while the rebels came. However I think he was right when he said seeing his family is worth dying for, but now his family is worth fighting for. Ishmael hasn't seen his family for months and would do anything to see them even if it was for a few minutes before fate.

  10. I believe some things happen for a reason but i don't really believe in fate. What I'm saying is that some small things were meant to happen but someones life's fate wasn't meant to happen.
If i hadn't seen my family for that long i think it would be a hard decision. In the end i think i would move on and not see my family because it would risk my life and i would put myself first. It would also depend on if I was just going to see them of live with them forever again, or if i was going to save them, then i would go.

  11. I agree with Caysi's statement about Ishmael being meant to live. I do believe in fate, but I also believe that we always have a choice. I disagree with Caysi and Ishmael in another regard. I would rather continue living and keep their memory alive. Although not being able to say good bye is hard, having them with you in spirit, and being able to know that their pain and suffering is over is a comfort. (to me at least)
Don't get me wrong, I love my family, but they would want me to keep on living and I think Ishmael's family wants the same thing.

  12. Yes because if it had been a different way he would be dead. He was suppose to be alive.

  13. I think he did the right thing because what would seeing his family do for him if he was dead?

  14. I believe in fate. I think that Ishmael did the right thing by fighting for his country. Look at him now, he is a hero and he has lots of war stories. Also if he had fought for the rebels he might be dead now.

  15. I believe in fate, so I think this was meant to be so he can do something great in life. I would've rather died with my family than be the only one alive.

  16. I believe in fate. But i think i would rather die with my family and see them for those last minutes than stay alive and never see them again. I also think Ishmael was meant to stay alive so he could remind us that life isn't as good here as the rest of the world. We need to realize lots of countries don't have running water or enough food to live. Ishmael helps us realize how good we have it.

  17. I dont believe in fate or that anything is set in stone. I believe in that everything has a reason for happening.I think ishmael was just as lucky as unlucky for living. If I had a choice of seeing my family one more time after not seeing them for so long and thinking they were dead i would choose to die with them.

  18. I believe in fate and I think that it was meant to be that Ishmael didn't get to see his family in time. He did feel the hurt and pain of not seeing his family again, but now that makes him fight harder and stronger for life. I agree with Ishmael. If I had a choice to die with my family or keep on living without them, I would die with them.

  19. I don't believe in fate. I think it's just a matter of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. I think that anything can hapen to anyone, and that odds would be more accrate than fate.

  20. I belive in fate. I think that Ishmael was not meant to see his family. He felt upset, but it makes him want to hurt any rebels who might have had something to do with him not seeing his family again. He became a better fighter and soldier because of that.

  21. I do not believe in fate. I think things come the way they are. There is no reason for this to happen. It was going to happen anyway. If it was me and my family in this situation, I would totally die with them. One of the things I live for is family. Without them, I couldn't survive. I would do the oppisite of Ishamel and die with them.
