I think reading Ishmael’s flashbacks are very important. The story would go on without these, so why do you think he chose to insert them? What do they tell us about Ishmael?
I think he chose to insert them to inform us about his life before the war broke out in Africa. These flashbacks tell us that Ishmael had a nice life with his family and friends before the war, now all he can think about is surviving the war.
What they tell us about Ishmael is that he has had a dandy life in the past, and now it's all about war and trying to stay alive with little food, water, and shelter. It shows a huge contrast between the past and his life right now.
I think they show us his longing for what was and what things STILL haunt him from the war. It shows us the way his mind is sorting through all of the chaos.
Flashbacks give us lots of emotion about the war and show us that he's tortured by it. It shows people that war isn't cool and that it's something that everyone should be afraid of.
