"End of Skill" and Vanessa

Vanessa loves Kente cloth because it makes her feel closer to her African heritage. The Ambassador loved Kente cloth because it was beautiful and skillful work. Neither used it "correctly" or treated it with the same respect as someone from Jimmy's village. But, in a way, both increased the value of the cloth by making it known to the world and popularized. What may be gained or lost by this? Is the value of Kente cloth then diminished or increased?

  1. I think that some can be lost from this because they are giving it away to the world, but some can be gained from this too because they are making it better known to people and they might get money. So i think it would be diminished and at the same time increased.

  2. You may gain more costumers because more people have heard of the Kente cloth now, but you may lose some money. The value of the Kente cloth will then diminish, because the more people want it, the more you have to make, and the more you have, the price won't be as expensive.

  3. The Kente is getting abused in a situation like this but it is also getting more popular and might become something that could be sold regularly.

  4. The original love of kente is lost, but with the loss comes a gain of new people to love it in the ways that the deem correct. Thinks have to adjust as life goes on, so the value of kente is increased as more people can come to cherish it. As an artist, I know that art can be perceived in many ways, and loved in increasingly different ways. Bringing kente to a modern level not only increases the value, but the knowledge of the rich African history.

  5. I think that kente cloth could gain some new traditions. Like having your kente cloth used as a rug or clothing for important gatherings. But what would be lost is how well kente cloth was treated and the importance it used to have.

  6. You have the global market going for you if you try to sell kente cloth, but if it is loved and valued like it is for Jimmy it is deeply hurtful if you see it as a rug or a thong bikini.

  7. I think it is being increased in value, because it's not just being used by a tribe, but now getting around the globe. So more people know what a kente cloth looks like and what is.

  8. I think it's a great idea sharing a culture with everyone else.So that other people might like your culture and,dig into it and find out more about your culture. So it's a win win situation. gegedy

  9. I think the value of the cloth may have been increased because Vanessa and the Ambassador were making the cloth known to other people from other countries.

  10. I think that the value of the cloth would be worth nothing after the entire is introduced to it. After more and more people know about the cloth the more of it they will have to make. This will make it less important to everyone.

  11. I think that the value of the cloth will remain unique once it is introduced to the rest of the world. If it keeps being sold to people that use it incorrectly then its meaning will not be as valuable.
