Novel Ending

The ending of the novel is incredibly powerful. At seven years of age, Ishmael had an answer to the monkey dilemma, although he never shared his answer with anyone until now.

In your opinion, why does Ishmael end the story here? Do you think Ishmael is happy with how he has chosen to live his life? Do you think Ishmael could have made different choices?

  1. I think that he ended it that way because it's a good way to end a story and it will keep you thinking about what you would do if you were that hunter.

  2. I think that Ismael ended it that way so that people will think how they would respond. I think that Ishmael is happy with how he choose to live his life, because he, unlike other child soldiers, had the chance to go through rehabilitation and get out of the country. I don't think he would have made any choices differently.

  3. I think that he ends it to keep you thinking on what you would do if you were the hunter. I also think it was a different way to end the story but it kept you thinking.

  4. I thought it was a different way to end the story. It wasn't my favorite ending but I didn't mind it. I thought Ishmael ended the story the way he did because the monkey story relates to what he went through with the war and how he had to make the decision weather or not to join the army.

  5. I think he ended the story here because he got out of the war at that point, and he left you with a thoughtful question.

  6. I think Ishmeal ended the story this way because it's kind of the same situation that he ended up with for going into the war and he just wanted people to realize his situation in a different way. I think he is now happy and I think he could've made different choices but the choices he made, he doesn't regret.

  8. I think he ended the book that way to keep you thinking and so you could realize how hard the choices were that kids and families had to make during the war. I think Ismael is happy now that he isn't part of the war. The choices that he made were right for him and the situations that he was in. So i don't think he should have chosen differently.

  10. I think that Ishmael ended his story with the monkey story because it sort of summed up the book. It describes his feelings about the war after he went through being a child soldier.

  11. I think he ends the story this way to send a message to everyone who reads it. But I think he could have ended talking about what he did wrong.

  12. I think he ended the story in a good way because it leaves you thinking about what the story really means and the things that he went through. I also think that Ishmael isn't very happy on the decisions he has made in his life. The reason why I don't think this is because he regrets being in the war and making the decision of revenge

  13. I think that Ishmael ended the story in as good way. It kept the reader thinking and had a great meaning to it. I don't the Ishmael was very happy with his decisions in life though because he had killed many innocent lives and had killed part of his life. He regrets his decisions of revenge and going into the war.

  14. I think he made the ending like this to send a message to the reader. There were many choices Ishmael could've made in this book.

  15. I think that he thought that he had a successful life even though he killed those people, it wasn't only from his own choice. People would encourage him to kill.

  16. I think that Ishmael couldn't have made any other choices because at the time they were the only choices for him to be able to survive. He ended the book with the monkey story because it related to the rest of the book because it is the same decision he made throughout the whole book.

  17. I didn't like the ending because i felt cheated and wanted the story to end like a normal book.

  18. No, I think that Ishmael had no other real choice. He was sort of forced into doing this all. I don't think he's that happy about the choices that he made.

  19. I think Ishmael ended the story in a good way, it made me keep thinking. I don't think that Ishmael was happy about his decisions he has made in life because he killed many people who most likely did not deserve it. He regrets going into the war and his decisions of revenge.

  20. I agree with everything Greta said. It was exactly what I was going to say. I really don't think revenge was a good choice. Revenge really isn't ever a good choice (unless it's a game). It will just hurt others and yourself.

  21. Ishmael chooses to end the story here because it really summarizes Ishmael's choices through the entire book.

  22. I think Ishmael ended the book where he did because it relates to what he was going through, throughout the war. It really kept me and I'm sure others thinking.

  23. I thought it was a good way to end the story. I don't think he was happy with the choices he made. He should not have joined the army to get revenge.

  24. The ending was ok. In many of the problems Ishmael was faced with there was no happy way to go. If he had a) left the army he would have had a slimmer chance of living or b) stayed he still had the posibility of being killed but in this instance he would have food and shelter. At any point he could have made different choices. Like at a fork in the road lets say he went right. But if he had gone left he would have met his family and lived happier. We won't be able to know though because in your life you only get one shot at the right choice and some people are just luckier than others.

  25. I liked the ending because I thought that it related to the Memoir throughout the book. The event when Ishmael runs into the monkey and he has to make a big decision. I think it was a good ending to keep readers thinking of what they would do in that situation. I think Ishmael was happy with his decision that he decided he would shoot the monkey so that others wouldn't have to be in the asme position.

  26. I think Ishmeal is happy with his choices because he grew into a stronger peron. He also got to meet a relative he didn't know.I don't think he could have done anything different because I think if he didn't join the army he probably wouldn't be living.

  27. I think Ishmael is happy with the choices because he can learn from them. Also he can teach other people whats going on and help other children who are going through this. He's probably not proud of beating up people and stuff like that though. He could have made different choices, like wether to go into the army or not. And not beating up people. I think Ishmeal is happy with some of the choices he made, but he knows he has made some bad ones too.
