Uncle and Laura

Ishmael had to rely on the kindness of his unknown uncle and of Laura. Neither "owed" him anything, yet both offered him a home. What does that tell you about society in general? Do you have any comments to add in regards to this?

  1. It tells you that family is family even if you don't know them very well and it's hard to find people who are family in the middle of the war.

  14. I think that it just goes to show that in Africa everybody tries to take care of everybody else. When his uncle lets him stay with him it just proves that he is kind and generous.

  17. It shows how everyone is so kind to each other. Everyone treats everyone like family. Most people in America probably wouldn't have done the same thing that Uncle and Laura did.

  28. Their society is a survival of the fittest. In many points did I question whether they where his real aunt and uncle. Both were nice and both cared but in that society he obviously got lucky and found relative/stranger that took him in.

  29. It shows me that society in general that people are kind to eachother. They have eachothers back even when they might not be family. The society is very kind to help others who are needy. They are willing to do what they can do to make the world a better place. Laura and Ishmael's uncle hardely knew Ishmael and they were willing to let him stay at thier homes.
