Impact

Has this book impacted you in anyway? For example, I've heard of child soldiers, but have never spent any time thinking about them. This book left me with an uneasy, tortured feeling. It made me appreciate my life here in America, safely away from the wars in Africa. What, if anything, has this book done for you?

  1. It made me think that we have such easy lives compared to them. We get food without having to worry if there will be any for tomorrow.

  2. I agree with Baxter, the book made me feel like we were living in luxury compared to kids in Africa, and that even though it can be tough here, we still have it easy, and we don't have to worry about how to survive the next day.

  3. This book made me very thankful for everything I have. A Long Way Gone really made me think about how lucky we really are and what we could do for others that are not as lucky.

  5. This book just made me realize that everybody no matter what they look like on the outside they have some problems at home or somewhere else in their lives.

  6. The book made me a little sick. I knew war was violent and people killed each other but I never knew they could be so cruel and brutal.

  7. This book impacted me in a huge way. It made me think about what things were actually going on in other countries. We are just very lucky that these things arn't happening in the United States.

  9. This book made me feel grateful for everything that I have and what I have been able to do in my past. I didn't have to go through war or go through anything like that. A long way gone made me realize what a great life I have.

  10. It makes me think that we live a totally different life than any of the people in Africa. It also makes me think of how the people in a war really feel about their life.

  11. This book made me thankful for what I have. Here in America we take almost everything for granted. We get clean water, heat, AC, food whenever we want, and most of us have a lot of family.

  12. This book made me think about how hard it would be to live in his position. It makes me think about how fortunate people are in America being able to not have to worry about getting killed every day.

  13. The book has impacted me a little. It has gotten me thinking of how easy we have it in America. In Africa you have to run from the war, hiding so you don't get killed or pulled into the war. In America we don't have child soldiers and we don't hold hostages. This book got me thinking about all of the pleasures we have in America that people don't have in Africa.

  14. The book makes me appreciate living in the Unites States way more than I used to. But other than that this book didn't really affect me.

  16. This book really made me think about what life would be like starving at night, not seeing your family after the age of eleven, or even how it would feel putting revenge on someone that has killed your family.

  18. This book impacted me in a big way. It has taught me how lucky I am to be living in America. I can't believe that Ishmael had to make such an important decision at 14 years old.
I don't think I could have made the decision. I also didn't realize how gross war is. It was very disturbing at times.

  19. It makes me think more about how things like this happen all the time around the world. Ishmael was not the first person this happened to, and he won't be the last. Also, it makes me think of how recently this book was published. This isn't something out of a history book, this is happening now.

  20. This book hasn't impacted me very much. It got me thinking about how lucky I am to be living in the United States. I am also lucky to not have to serve in wars. Ishmael had to make some very important decisions at a very young age. I would not have been able to make such big decisions as Ishmael.

  21. This book has made and impact on me. It made me more aware to everything that is going around in the world and what is being taken from people. How people are being forced to be soldiers. This book made me feel bad for those out there who are like this.

  23. I think this book has made me look back and it made me greatful for the things we have. It showed me how lucky I was to be living in the United States where there is no war going on.

  26. I know that I won't have to ever go through what Ishmael did as a child which makes me realize that I shouldn't take anything for granite because it can all go away just like that.

  27. This book made me feel like Ishmael should stop complaining. Here is this guy whining about how he wants to alert people on child soldiers... Then why write a memoir? The book was about Ishmael and if really wanted to make people realize this dilema then make a pop up or a touch and feel book or something like that. In the end Ishmael lived happily ever after. Well if he had lost an arm or maybe a leg then I would feel bad but all he suffered was a minor leg wound. Not that bad. Point stated.

  28. This book has made me feel grateful for what I have and that I am lucky to live in the United States. This book makes realize that I really don't have as many responsibilities and worries as the child soldiers in Africa. Ishmael has to deal with many big decisions and has to go through a lot of horrific events at a young age.
